Jervis Bay Marine Park - Consultation & Management
Consultation
Jervis Bay Marine Park Advisory Committee
Like all other marine parks, Jervis Bay Marine Park has an advisory committee made up of representatives of various local community and stakeholder groups. This is the main avenue for consultation.
The current Jervis Bay Park Advisory Committee was appointed following a call for expressions of interest in committee membership.

Wider consultation
The MPA holds local public meetings on important issues relating to Jervis Bay Marine Park and conducts public surveys from time to time. Both are advertised in the media.
Members of the public are welcome to contact the marine park office.
Management
The zoning plan
Each marine park has a zoning plan that establishes sanctuary, habitat protection, general use and special purpose zones and sets out the activities permitted in each zone. The zoning plan is a key management tool.
Developed following extensive consultation, the Jervis Bay Marine Park Zoning Plan was released in late 2002. It establishes:
- sanctuary zones of 4 300 hectares or 20% of the park where fishing and collection of marine life is totally prohibited
- habitat protection zones of 15 600 hectares or 72% of the park which allow recreational fishing but exclude commercial trawling
- general use zones of 1 618 hectares or 8% of the park allowing for both recreational and commercial fishing and collecting
- special purpose zones of 48 hectares of 0.2% of the park that include the Huskisson wharves and naval training facilities at HMAS Creswell.

The operational plan
The operational plan outlines how the Marine Parks Authority will sustainably manage the Jervis Bay Marine Park to meet the objectives of the Marine Parks Act 1997. It takes into account the strategies of other agencies, in particular the Booderee National Park Board of Management which manages Commonwealth waters in the south of Jervis Bay.
Finalised in 2003 following community input, the operational plan addresses specific issues. These include:
- habitat and species conservation
- ecologically sustainable management of activities such as fishing, whale watching and scuba diving
- management of Indigenous and non-Indigenous heritage
- pollution control and management of marine pests
- research, community education, compliance with restrictions on activities in the different park zones, and permits.
