Foreword
In recognition of the important contribution of the coast and our oceans to our Australian way of life, the NSW Government is developing a series of marine protected areas to conserve the marine biodiversity of NSW.
Jervis Bay is the second marine park in NSW to have a comprehensive zoning plan giving greater protection for important marine life.
Over two years of community consultation has gone into developing this plan. It means everyone will continue to enjoy this unique area known for its scenic beauty and exceptional waters.
New sanctuary zones within the park will greatly benefit our marine environment. Scientific evidence indicates sanctuary zones create long lasting increases in marine species and biodiversity.
Scientists anticipate significant flow on benefits for fish populations near sanctuary areas. This is good news for marine biodiversity and park visitors.
The plan also maximises opportunities for lasting benefits to fish stocks and the marine environment by surrounding sanctuary areas with habitat protection zones.
On behalf of the NSW Government, we would like to thank the Jervis Bay community for their participation in the development of this plan. The input and support of local residents, small businesses and local council have been invaluable.
