Holiday fun in the Solitary Islands Marine Park

There’s a lot going on in Solitary Islands Marine Park

It’s a great time to explore the Solitary Islands Marine Park.

Solitary Islands Marine Park education officer Ellie Marks said canoeing adventures, rock pool rambles and a marine science talk about the fascinating creatures and habitats in the marine park were all on offer over the holidays.

“It’s a great opportunity to explore and learn about this fantastic marine park. There’s a lot on offer. The Plover Island Rock Pool Ramble for example is a guided discovery of the amazing biological diversity of rock platforms of the Solitary Islands Marine Park.

“Get up and close with friendly and wonderful creatures like the sea hare, identify dangerous and deadly inhabitants and learn about threatened migratory shorebirds which forage along the rocky inter-tidal zone at this time of year.

“Canoeing is another great activity that can be enjoyed in the marine park. Everyone can enjoy a quiet paddle on Moonee Creek with expert guides from the Marine Parks Authority and the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

“It’s an opportunity to learn about the fascinating wildlife and vegetation which occurs in the park, as well as hear about the serious threats posed by rising sea levels and climate change.

“Another great place to paddle in the marine park is the Corindi River and estuary, which is a feeding zone for internationally significant migratory seabirds.”

Ms Marks said as well as being out and about in the park another way to learn about marine life was to attend this month’s talk by marine biologist Dr Steve Smith at the National Marine Science Centre at Charlesworth Bay. Ms Marks said his presentation would be called Living Together in the Sea and would focus on strange and unique symbiotic relationships in the marine environment.
