Jervis Bay community shows off its marine park

The community is literally taking the lead in showing off the Jervis Bay Marine Park to locals and tourists alike this summer.
Next week a number of specially-trained volunteers will start a series of Jervis Bay Marine Park walks which will continue throughout the Christmas holiday period
All members of the public are invited to take part in the walks, which will include discovering the rocky foreshore in the Huskisson Sanctuary Zone, exploring mangroves and sea grasses in the Currumbene Creek Mudflat Sanctuary Zone and learning about maritime history at Currarong.
Jervis Bay Marine Park’s Sue Brown says the walks, which are free, will also highlight the rich Aboriginal cultural heritage around the marine park.
“Each walk, as well as having a guide to talk about the natural history of the area, will have an indigenous guide who will talk about the important ‘connection to Country’.
“The walks are only short and are accessible for people of most ages and fitness levels.
“We hope this program will be a great asset to local tourism and will educate and delight everyone.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity to show off the wonders of Jervis Bay Marine Park. I’m so thrilled ordinary members of the community have been so keen to become guides and that we are also able to create training and future employment opportunities for local people.”
The Jervis Bay Marine Park Christmas program is being funded by the Southern Rivers Catchment Management Authority and run by the Jervis Bay Marine Park.
Bookings can be made by calling the Jervis Bay Marine Park on 4441 7752.
