David Harasti

The spotlight will be on the beautiful Cape Byron Marine Park next week as the 2009 Byron Underwater Festival gets into full swing.

In its third year the festival is the only underwater festival and includes many great things to do below and above the water.

One of the guest speakers at this year’s festival will be marine biologist and researcher from the Port Stephens Great Lakes Marine Park, Dave Harasti, whose presentation on Why Seahorses are Sexier then Shipwrecks, should thrill many.

Dave, who is also a keen and talented underwater photographer, will also talk about the many weird and exotic critters he’s photographed.

Dave’s talk about Seahorses will be held 7pm on Thursday April 30th at the Southern Cross University Room, Byron Bay Community Centre. Dave’s talk on Weird and Exotic Creatures of NSW, will be held at 4pm on Saturday May 2nd.

As well as many talks and presentations, there will be snorkelling, diving and kayaking and an underwater photo and video competition.

The festival will start this Monday the 27th of April and run to Sunday the 3rd of May in Byron Bay, NSW.

Cape Byron Marine Park is home to over 500 species of fish, 30 species of hard coral, grey nurse sharks, turtles, whales, dolphins and shore birds. It also features Julian Rocks which is one of the most popular dive sites in Australia. For more information about the festival please visit www.underwaterfestival.com.au.
