Jervis Bay Marine Park encourgaes visitors to pick up new marine Education Kit
The Jervis Bay Marine Park is encouraging all visitors to the area to stop by and pick up a new marine education resource kit.
Marine parks officer Sue Brown says the kit will give families a much greater appreciation of the marine park and will make their stay all the more rewarding.
Ms Brown said the marine education resource kit included information, not only about the biodiversity of the marine park, but also about other interesting topics such as the shipwrecks and maritime heritage of the Jervis Bay area, the history and management of the Jervis Bay Marine Park and how to help care for the marine environment.
“This information will only add to the enjoyment of locals and visitors to Jervis Bay Marine Park. It is pitched at school-age children and will be of interest to school groups, as well as families.
“It’s such a thrill to be able to educate the community about the wonders of this marine park – there’s so much to learn and understand about our marine environment, and this package is a fun way for children and adults to become involved in that.”
Ms Brown said the kit included some excellent holiday ideas such activity sheets and species identification activities for kids to complete in the field, as well as a CD depicting many of the plants and animals found in the marine park.”
Jervis Bay Marine Park spans over 100km of coastline and adjacent ocean extending from Kinghorn Point in the north to Sussex Inlet in the south and includes most of Jervis Bay. It contains a variety of habitats and is home to a unique mix of tropical and temperate species including the weedy sea-dragon, eastern blue devil fish, migrating whales, bottlenose dolphins, little penguins, fur seals and the endangered grey nurse shark.
Ms Brown said the resource kit has been developed with funding from the Southern Rivers Catchment Management Authority and gratefully acknowledged their support. She said the kits are free and are available by contacting the Jervis Bay Marine Park office at Woollamia Road, Huskisson on 4428 3000, or emailing jervis.bay@mpa.nsw.gov.au . It is also available to download.
